Cold Rocks, Hot Summer

Last night was the final night of play in the Orange County Curling Club spring league.

Our final match was set to start at 6:30, and while I usually dress for Curling when I leave home, it was just too warm, and too beautiful.  Bright, sunny and well into the 80's (around 27 degrees Celsius for the rest of the world).  I wore a t-shirt, shorts and sandals on my drive to the Rink.

Inside it was much cooler.  Pleasantly so after a hot day.  I changed into warm pants, wool socks, and curling shoes, and we went forth to play.

We weren't in the top-bracket -- that was handled the week before, with an easy win for the ultimate League Champs.  Not our best game.

We got off to a good start: we scored 1 in the first end, 3 in the second, 1 in the third -- then our opponents scored a monster 5 in the fourth end to tie it.  We scored 1 in the 5th, they scored one each in the 6th and 7th, we scored one in the 8th, and we're into extra ends.

Their 2 in the 9th end brought them the win, but they did have to work for it -- we were in the game right down to the last rocks.

Most fun I've ever had in a game we lost.  I threw some good take-outs, and am finally finding the right weight after an ugly spell of throwing through the house.

(Update: told my business partner about the game and he said "It's especially good to play in a match that would have been fun to watch.")

The next League starts August 7th.  I'm happy to say that I'll be playing again with Misha and "Guillermo" but will miss Maarten.  Some brilliant recruiting by our Skip makes the next league promising.

For Tuesday night's "drop-in" session, we're going to put our "Vacaville" team together as a team for the first time.  That's September 3rd-5th.

Makes me wonder what our Canadian friends do during the summer.
